Assessment and reporting in E.A.L

Assessment takes place each lesson and is completed in many ways, both formally and informally. Day-to-day assessment is informal and takes the form of teacher notes, marking and feedback to the pupils. The English Academy team follows the same marking policy as the rest of the school so children experience consistency and can easily understand how they are progressing. In the Junior school, one of the key termly assessments is in accordance with a progression of skills in E.A.L.
The E.A.L team writes termly reports for each E.A.L pupil who is either in the English Academy or is receives withdrawal or in-class support. In the report parents will find comments on each area of learning covered. For a beginner learner this includes a comment on reading, writing, speaking and listening. As the pupil’s English develops, the focus in lessons may be shifted to certain skills. In this case only the skills being taught are reported on. After reports have been sent home, parents are invited to come to conferences with the E.A.L staff. Parents are also welcome to come to discuss their child’s progress at any time during the school year.
