All the students in the Junior School are encouraged to develop their own individual learning skills in stimulating, colourful and child-friendly surroundings. There is strong emphasis is on high academic standards, and an extensive and varied programme of extra-curricular activities is also be an integral part of the curriculum, encouraging students to fulfil their potential wherever their talents may lie. The experience, expertise and dedication of our highly-qualified staff create a positive atmosphere where students thrive and can achieve their very best as independent learners.
The students are prepared for entry into the Senior School by a highly effective combination of traditional, formal teaching and imaginative and creative approaches using innovative techniques and incorporating the Eight Aptitudes model. The Junior School curriculum is rooted in the English National Curriculum, suitably enhanced to reflect the fact that we are an international school with a multi-national student body. We nurture learning through child-centred approaches, technology and a variety of learning styles. We also endeavour to develop within our children thinking skills and strong personal characteristics.
All students from Nursery to Year 5 are taught by a classroom teacher, who, as well as teaching many of the principal subjects, provides the excellent pastoral care for which Eagle House, Wellington UK’s preparatory school, is renowned. As the students progress through the Junior School, they also experience the benefits of high-quality specialist subject teaching. The children work in small classes with experienced teachers supported by teaching assistants. As one would expect, the children spend the majority of time with their classroom teacher but the children do benefit from specialist teaching in Mandarin, Music and PE and Swimming. Students in Year 6 are taught by specialist teachers across the curriculum to support effective transition to the Senior School.
Our students benefit from excellent infrastructure and facilities which includes a dedicated music and art studios, Junior library, guided reading room, Information Communication Technology (ICT) suites, and two playgrounds, as well as use of the wider facilities of the College, including the Seldon Theatre, playing field, two swimming pools, sports centre, tennis and basketball courts.
The Junior Library and guided reading room provides a wide range of books and other media to support the curriculum in the Junior School. It has a strong role in facilitating voluntary reading and literacy development. All students visit the Junior library on a weekly basis with their class, and are encouraged to use the library at other times, such as breaks and after school, when there is a happy, relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy reading in colourful surroundings. Teachers and the Librarian are happy to advise about reading choices, and promote the reading habit through author visits, competitions and other means. New books, published in various countries around the world, are regularly added to the library collection.
Students of all ages can also take part in the Extra Curricular Activities Program. Each term a wide range of activities are offered in the areas of sport, visual and performing arts, community involvement, ensemble and individual music, languages and more.
The Junior School values the cultural, religious and linguistic diversity of the students and seeks to establish respect for all nations. We also value the individual child and seek to meet their needs within our resources. In particular, we aim to effectively and sensitively welcome all new students and their families into our community and to fully prepare them for the next stage of their education and life.
The Junior School comprises the first three Key Stages of the English National Curriculum:
- The Foundation Stage comprises Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception (2 to 5 yrs)
- Key Stage 1 comprises Year 1 and Year 2 (5 to 7 years)
- Key Stage 2 comprises Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (7 to 11 years)
